Mar. 25th, 2010 04:55 pmAuthor Note: I got to thinking what might be said of Garak upon his death, and this tiny little crumb presented itself. I almost hesitate to call it a story, as it's so short, but when I wrote it, it felt complete.

He was a tangle and a cypher, a siren song to mystery. He was the enigmatic wine dark sea, washing his artifacts onto his shores for a tantalizing glimpse, only to reclaim them one by one and leave his beach combers bereft. He was never the same man day to day, on the surface or beneath. I sometimes think that he was no one at all, and that was both his greatest triumph and greatest tragedy. All I know for certain about him, even after all these years, is that I miss him now that he's gone and have discovered more about him by what his absence has wrought within me than I ever learned while he was here. I like to think he'd appreciate the irony, my Elim. My one great love.
