Like most dysfunctional patterns, the people in the thick of the trees fail to see the forest. I get the impression Garak keeps thinking, "This time I've figured it out." Of course, that rarely works as well in practice as in theory. Have to give him credit for trying and his heart being in the right place, at least.
That scene with Julian and Ziyal evolved really spontaneously. All I knew for sure when I started it was that she intended to confront him about his attitude toward her. I think there's enough of a child-like playfulness in Julian and an inexperienced innocence in Ziyal that the two would actually mesh well together as friends. He's the sort to bring her out of her shell and get her to try new things, and she's accepting and far more understanding than most other people he knows, something he craves in his life. It disappointed me that we never saw much of her relations beyond Garak, Kira, and Dukat in the show.
It's always hard to see ugly traits in people you love. I think Leeta's friendship with Garak will always be tainted with aspects of that. Their history and respective backgrounds are too much at odds for them not to keep hitting that wall.
And I am so looking forward to some of the upcoming episodes it is NOT funny. I have to keep forcing myself not to rush it, because I want to write about all of that now, now, now! Hee!
